Circular by Nature – newFEFCO campaign
On 21st of March, FEFCO participated in a high-level forum discussing the role of packaging in the Circular Economy. The debate, organised by EURACTIV with the support of FEFCO, attracted around 80 participants from EU authorities, NGOs, industry and other EU stakeholders. FEFCO also launched its “Circular by Nature” campaign at the event.
The Circular Economy is business as usual for the Corrugated Packaging Industry. After all, today’s corrugated packaging is perfectly circular: it’s 100% recyclable, bio-based and biodegradable. Corrugated packaging paper is made almost entirely from natural materials: recycled and virgin fibres, along with natural starch-based glue. The fibres come from renewable sources, the sustainably managed forests. Moreover, paper and board is one of the most recycled packaging materials in the EU. Corrugated packaging is already supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 target to halve retail and consumer food waste and reduce food losses along production and supply chains. All corrugated packaging has recyclability built in – it’s a natural eco-design feature – and can be designed to fold easily, simplifying preparation for recycling. Lightweight, strong and versatile, corrugated packaging minimises its impact on the environment throughout its entire life cycle – before, during and after use – confirming its perfectly circular model.
