Inauguration of Stora Enso’s UBC line in Ostroleka

March 7, 2024 marked the inauguration of the UBC line for processing liquid product packaging at Stora Enso’s Ostroleka plant. It is an investment of €29 million. It was made possible thanks to the involvement of Stora Enso and Tetra Pak. The line is to become the main center for processing multi-material packaging in Central and Eastern Europe. It is estimated that the plant’s processing capacity will increase from 25 per year to 75 thousand tons per year. At the Elba Hotel in Ostroleka, J. Pawlowski welcomed guests from Poland and abroad. During the official part, letters of praise from the authorities were read. On behalf of Minister of Climate and Environment, the letter was read by J. Darska, acting director of the Waste Management Department. On behalf of the Marshal of the Mazovian Voivodeship, D. Czyż, director of the CKU in Ostroleka, spoke. They included thanks to the companies for participating in such a serious undertaking, which is of colossal importance for the recycling system. It was emphasized that this is also very important in the context of EU regulations such as the PPWR. The SVP of Recycled Containerboard, M. Freidrich, spoke next. He talked about the challenges associated with this investment and emphasized how important it is in terms of the circular economy.

Speaking on behalf of Tetra Pak was M. Pfanner, Vice President Sustainability Operations. In his speech, he noted that the investment is intended to ensure the disposal of waste not only from Poland, but also from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between producers, customers, local authorities and processing plants so that the recycling system could work properly. This was followed by an appearance by P. Niedzwiecki, Engineering & Investment Manager, who spoke in some detail about the recycling process at the plant. At the end of the official part, a panel discussion was scheduled, which included M. Sommer, Sustainability Manager for Poland and the Baltic States, (Tetra Pak) , M. Dziczek, Director of the Management Office (EKO-PAK), R. Kulesza, Director of Pulp, Energy and Sustainable Development (Stora Enso) and Ł. Sosnowski, President (Prokarton Foundation). The participants focused on the role to be played by the investment in the circular economy system in our country.

After lunch, the meeting participants went on a tour of the Ostroleka plant. It was possible to see a paper machine (MP5) and a line for processing liquid food packaging (UBC line). Participating in the event from the SPP office were: J. Turski, K. Godlewska, A. Werner, M. Jastrzębski and J. Żubrzak.
